Mister Midnight, a pal of FACTOR168 Creative Event Company, sent us a link to an outfit that is producing a ‘trompe-l’oeil’ styled wall and door stickers that provides a sensational 3D-ish effect. At first we were a tad skeptical but they are actually really cool.

We are already buzzing with the huge opportunities that these could present with an events and exhibition setting. Or for that matter – the office.

Here are just a few examples of these 3D sticker decales in use. We agree with Midnight, who on earth wouldn’t want to have a secret tunnel behind a bookcase leading up into a a secret laboratory, workshop or study. We would!

The online suppliers Couture Deco from the USA advise that they are washable, UV resistant, highly durable, and probably most importantly – fire resistant. Big ticks all round. The only thing that is not so great is that you apply them with regular wallpaper glue which in itself is not so bad except pretty much everyone here at our studio have had disastrous experiences at home doing this. Size? Pretty standard sizing however they can of course be adjusted for a specific spaces by simply trimming with scissors or a stanely knife. Apparently they are dead easy to remove.

Costs? At the time of this post – USD$279 plus shipping… so certainly not cheap and probably better suited to more permanent fitouts like cafe, restaurants, office spaces, and the home… but if budget does allow then from an event point of view – the results would be… as one of our younger staff members is want to declare – ‘well wicked’. Which we understand is a good thing. haha. hmm.

This company also produces other assorted decales that have really strong creative event usage possibilities. We are particularly excited with the ‘bird cage’ imagery. Kinda cool. And at USD$109 plus shipping, a little more manageable. Can also be applied to glass which is v.cool.

Source Notes:

These 3D stickers can be sourced from Couture Deco. And a special thank you to Midnight for the reference.

A lasting memory of my teenages years was seeing Princess Leia in one of the Star Wars movies hanging out with Jabba the Hutt dressed as a slave girl – complete with metal bikini.

Well it’s May the 4th err Force Be with You!” In celebration of Star Wars Day – which character did you like best? Vote HERE. I think I’m gonna have to vote for Lei…

It seems other people share this same interest – one even created a website exclusively devoted to the slave outfit called Leia’s Metal Bikini.

It got me to thinking… and so of course I googled it and crikey! The results were… diverse… and perhaps a little perverse…

Check out some of the lesser deeply disturbing star moments in the pantheon of Princess Leia slaveness.

Yeah… okay so one of them isn’t Princess Leia but it does appeal to me. Odd. Very odd. Almost as much as this clip where some artists have engineered a full on pillow fight of a group of girls costumed up… for artistic purposes.

Who would have thought ducks are so popular. According to our googlemanialytics thingamebob, the internet readship kinda dug the duck post by Greg (see it here if you missed it… good times good times). Perhaps we will see a 2010 run on duck themed and duck populated events… standby.

Oh and still on Ducks – by popular demand, we’ve been asked by many… okay specifically Todd the barista not batista down at the corner cafe with his feedback (analogue style… he spoke to us in person) on the Muse – we present a classic Duck moment.

Join us fellow Gen Y’ers, Babyboomers, and the X tribe as we trip down memory lane… or in this case memory ‘street’ as Ernie and his rubbery best pal celebrate their special friendship.

Enjoy. And then yes you can return to the destructive force that is Duckzilla! Bwwaahahaha!

One of our clients we contract to is a global live communications agency with a significant presence within the exhibition services sector and a growing presence within the design/delivery of events. Uniplan – German ownership, heavy China presence. They do nice work.

In a short number of weeks we will have said goodbye to the Year of the Ox and will welcome the Year of the significantly cooler Tiger. Grrrrrrrowl.

So with that in mind, we simply couldn’t resist sharing this festive image produced by the talented artisians within the Hong Kong office following Germanic ‘enigneering’ input.

Sure it is odd. But I kinda like it. It strikes a really nice balance – adhering to the organizations CI expectations while still injecting a strong sense of fun and energy. Memorable.

We have a great deal of affection for this East-West fusion company and how it arm wrestles with it’s cultural dual identity.

And on that note – we wish one and all a Happy Chinese New Year!

Importantly – you’ll need speakers for this link…otherwise… well you’ll find out.

So turn the speakers up, click the link and sit back and listen… one of the things we really like about this is that the longer you listen the more the ‘story’ develops… good fun and we recommend leaving it running while you pop out for a meeting or lunch… guarranteed to drive your workmates zombo-crazy.

We all have our own little moments or routines we practice before going live with an event. It can’t hurt right?

Some of us have lucky socks or undies, perhaps a handful of sunflower seeds… or a jangly keyring doo-dad…a single well worn poker chip… you know what I mean. Lucky stuff. Just to be sure.

One of our founding creatives, Darren Kerr, has a very odd ‘lucky’ practice he harbours when delivering a special event. Once he has conducted his Q2Q rehearsals, done his site walk through, greeted and briefed speakers and talent alike, and ensured everything is as it should be … he feels the need to play his lucky track through the room’s PA before he is content and good to ‘go-for-doors’… that track is “Funky Town”.

Importantly – we are not talking about the classic Lipps Incorporated 1970′s disco hit version but rather the 1980′s cover version by Aussie synth band Pseudo Echo.

We suspect it is the ‘funky’ Korg keyboard slung over the shoulder that seems to appeal most. In fact he loves the track so much he has attempted to book the band a number of times for clients eager for a really fun ’80′s themed retro event… thankfully he has so far been thwarted by the FACTOR168 good taste style police. He has however successfully engaged other ’80′s musical warriors such as ‘Air Supply’ so you can’t win them all. Oh dear.

‘Funky Town’ fast approaches. Strap in.

A TVC celebrates Virgin Atlantic’s 25th anniversary is fabulous in terms of being on-brand, fun, and memorable.

It is grim. It is 1984. The Gordon Geckos are on the loose. Everything is beige.

Britain’s miner strike, big teased hair, asteroid video game (loved this thing along with the sitdown Pacman), brick mobile phones, vinyl records, leopard prints, Maggie Thatcher lurks behind the scenes and the Cold War Cowboy is at work across the Atlantic. Travel is chorelike and sucks.

Cue the Frankie Goes to Hollywood inspired soundtrack and out stride forth the Virgin Atlantic glamourzillians in their fitted bright red uniforms and sexy stilettos – cutting a swath through a sea of tired beige. Ruby Cool. Very Ruby Cool.

Yup. Based off this ad alone, I’d want to change airlines too. The promise of an attractive branded experience over a simple transactional service can be very powerful. Well done Virgin Atlantic.

Sometime ago the Vodka goliath Smirnoff undertook an online campaign through their web portal promoting their new premium premix cooler – Smirnoff Ice.

We really digged this clip as it had all the right ‘mix’ of components that translated into a good communication experience. Strong characters, a good storyline, a strong sense of humour, a fresh take of pop culutre (preps rapping!) and above all – much like the product – it was all good fun.

Enjoy. But of course in moderation.
